Carlos G :

I’m confused on which would best suit me, if you can help me out i would appreciate it. Here a quick list of what im looking for.

I want to.

Build commercial buildings, sky rise buildings, bridges and so forth

Im interested in the actual design of the building I.E what makes it stand, what supports it?

I want to sit down and draw out how the building will look then travel to the field and check on my creation on each step it takes.

Im not artistically inclined but i love sketching even though it looks like poop.

I want to be an important part of the building process i dont just want to draw things thats not me.

i dont want to be someone who makes sure the structure is safe and never does anything else.

i also want to decide what material are actually used in the building process.

any ideas which of the 2 best suits me?

STRUCTURAL!!!!! That’s what im doing!!!

gatorbait

Most architects are structural engineers.

It is almost impossible to come up with a logical building design unless you know what will be involved in the structural design. If you draw pictures of buildings that cannot be designed you won’t get too much work.

When I started college many, many, many years ago, in order to become a registered architect you first needed a BSCE degree with a structural major and then you got to study architecture as part of a masters program so that by the time you were qualified to practice as an architect you had a masters degree.

you have answered your own question
“Im interested in the actual design of the building —
Im not artistically inclined ”
so the best thing for you will be structural engineering

It doesn’t matter what you become….Eng or Arct.
If i were you then i would choose Eng. for me. I think Arct. is not adventures as Eng. Arct is like Beauty contest and it dose not need sharp mind but should have well creativity and Eng is about responsibility . i dose not mean to say that Arct is nothing.. its mean a lot to me and to a project…. i really respect Arct. but i like eng. may be because i am a eng. and in other hand i like rough eng. which is civil engineering. And who say Civil eng. cant design building? If you be live your self then you can design more then an arc. then you will know value of eng. just make some dream to build you dream project and keep you eye and mind you head so that it will never let you down to say be Eng.
